The gradient of x-ray intensity is much steeper here than on the nebulaΓÇÖs opposite side. The disparity results from the shock front having collided on this side with a dense cloud that slows its progress and rapidly heats it. On the opposite side, the shock front encounters no density ridge and so continues with little hindrance.
